The food is lake food: carp, bleak, eel, and whatever the Crmnica valley grew that week. Standards are decent across the board and genuinely good in two or three places.
What to order
- Krap u sanduku — carp baked with prunes and wine. The signature dish of the lake, and better than it sounds.
- Ukljeva — dried bleak, salty and intense, eaten as a starter with rakija.
- Grilled eel — rich, oily, superb; order it only where the turnover is high.
- Njeguški pršut with local cheese — from the mountains above, not the lake, but standard.
- Vranac and Krstač — the red and white of the Crmnica valley. Ask for the house version; it is usually the neighbour's.

The Crmnica wine detour
Ten minutes uphill from Virpazar, the villages of Godinje and Gluhi Do have stone cellars pouring Vranac that never leaves the valley. Godinje's 15th-century houses alone justify the drive, and the loop is beautiful by e-bike. If you plan to taste seriously, stay the night — there is a recommended apartment near Skadar Lake within a short drive.
Frequently asked questions
What food is Skadar Lake known for?
Freshwater fish — carp baked with prunes (krap u sanduku), dried bleak (ukljeva) and grilled eel — paired with Vranac red wine from the neighbouring Crmnica valley.
Are restaurants in Virpazar expensive?
No. A main course of grilled lake fish runs €12–€18 and a full lunch with wine lands around €20–€25 per person, cheaper than equivalent food on the coast.
Do Virpazar restaurants take cards?
Most do, but the connection is unreliable and several family konobas are cash only. Carry €50 in cash for a lunch and park fees.
