Skadar Lake beaches and swimming spots

Updated 2026-06-10 · 1.550 words · Written on the lake

Murici: the only swimmable beach worth the drive.

People assume a lake this size is lined with beaches. It is not. Most of the shoreline is reed, mud or cliff, and about half the swimmable spots exist only when the water is at the right level. These are the ones that reliably work.

Is the water clean?

In the southern basin at Murici, yes — it is spring-fed, cool and clear to two or three metres in June. The northern shallows near Virpazar are warm, silty and full of organic matter; the swim is unpleasant rather than unsafe. Most boat tours know exactly which bay is clean on the day and will take you there.

The bays you can only reach by boat

The southern cliffs between Murici and the Albanian border hide small rock coves with three metres of visibility and no road access at all. Reaching them is the practical argument for the premium Skadar Lake private tour — the group loop never crosses the basin.

  • Bring water shoes; the ledges are limestone and sharp.
  • No facilities means no shade — a hat matters more than a towel.
  • Swim before 13:00 if you dislike wind chop.
